In order to stay fit and healthy long term you need to exercise. If you are just getting started with exercise or want to change up your workout, walking is perfect for you. And, although slower than running, there are still many health benefits from fast walking.
The Health Benefits From Fast Walking
1. Enhances Your Mood
Studies show that exercise such as walking everyday can enhance your mood while relieving feelings of stress, anxiety and even depression.
In fact, after my first power walk, I felt happier. My mood changed right away and I was excited to do it again the next day!
According to Smitha Bhandari, MD. When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain. Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine.
2. Easiest Form of Exercise
Exercise is essential for good health. However, many people feel that it's just another daunting task on a long list of to do's. But, walking is truly the easiest form of exercise. Recently, I made the switch from my 20 minute workout routine to walking outdoors thanks to my cousin, Cheyenne. Who by the way, speed walks 10km a day! Not only does she have great legs, but it enhanced her mood and wellbeing. She inspired me to get out there!
I discovered that fast paced walking is fun and easy to do. Especially, now that the weather is warmer. Lace up your runners, put in your earphones, listen to your favourite music and get out there. Before you know it, you will be up to 8km a day. It will change your life, I promise!
3. Weight Loss
Walking is great for weight loss if you stick to a routine. Meaning, if you fast walk 45 minutes a day, you can lose fat in your belly, butt and thighs. Also, if you stick to a regime it will help you keep the weight off long term.

4. Tones Your Legs
If you can commit to at least 45 minutes of brisk walking everyday, it can shape and tone your legs and you know what they say “muscle burns more calories than fat.” Therefore, the more muscle you build from walking over time, can help you lose more weight!
Healthy Walking Tip
1. Sometimes when you commit to a particular type of exercise for a long period of time, you can reach a point of little or no change. If that's the case, you simply need to speed up your stride, change your route (perhaps incline your treadmill or find an outdoor route with hills/incline) or add to your duration to see faster results.
2. Stretch, Stretch, Stretch before and after every walking to prevent injury.
