Are you feeling drained, tired and overwhelmed by the amount of clutter accumulated in your home? Clutter can make a room feel stressful and create a feeling of restlessness. Especially, since most objects can have emotions attached to them. Some emotions may be negative, raising feelings of guilt or fear which may be why you have difficulty letting things go. Holding onto nostalgic items such as old jeans, an heirloom, something willed to you from a family member (that you don’t really like) are examples of unhelpful reminders of the past. Therefore, using these 5 effective steps to declutter your home, may free you from your past and allow you to move forward.

Cleansing your home and transforming it into a clutter free, well functioning space that contains only items you need and love, will improve the energy in your home and may make you feel more relaxed and peaceful in the space.

5 Effective Steps To Declutter Your Home

Start Cleansing Your Home

First, try these 5 effective steps to declutter your home. Second, the best way to start is to completely cleanse one room at a time. Third, once the first room is completed, you will have a place to relax and recharge, while you tackle each of the remaining rooms in your home.

I would suggest getting a friend or family member to help you. Someone that is understanding, supportive and not afraid to be firm with you. There may be times when you need a cheering squad to push you along and of course someone to help with the heavy lifting.

Step 1. Remove Everything In The Room

Make this fun and literally race every item out of the room including the items in your closest (if there is one). It is so much easier creating a functional space starting with a blank canvas.

Step 2. Prepare Boxes & Label Them

Prepare boxes and label them in three categories: Give Away (Charity), The Dump and Sell. Now, be careful with the Sell items. They must not linger, and you should only have a few items that you can easily manage on your favourite on-line yard sale sites. Do not make a Sell Box unless you plan to tackle this immediately the next day. If they don’t sell within two weeks, they must be given away. This is not an excuse to hang onto these items or let them creep back in. Remember the goal is to free yourself!

Step 3. Visualize How You Want The Space To Look

Visualize how you want this room to look. This is the fun part. If you are starting with your bedroom, the bed is the largest item in the room, position it first. Where would it work and look the best? Once you’ve got it in position, make up the bed fresh.

Helpful Tip: If you take the time every morning to make your bed, it can feel like such an accomplishment and if nothing else happens or gets done during the day at the very least, you accomplished that! Congratulations, you have positioned the most important piece of furniture in this room.

Step 4. Keep Only What You Need

Determine what you really need for this space to feel good and function well. Bring back into the room a bed, dresser/mirror, night table(s) lamp(s) and if your room is large enough for a chair. (If you have room you may want to create a cozy reading spot to slip away to). If you would like to change the furniture, you could sell what you have and put the money toward a new item. When dressing your night table(s) only keep lamps, a vase for flowers or a book (this is not a place to store stuff). If you have some momentous items, choose 3 – 5 items only for a collage on the wall or arrangement on your dresser. Voila, these are all of the items required for this room to make it function well.

Step 5. Freedom

Now step outside the room and face any emotional attachments to the items that are remaining. Lean on your family/friend and go through each item and place them in the three categories of boxes. Once the boxes are full, follow through with your plan and take them directly to the dump or charity right away. This should be a part of your agenda before starting the next room.

Congratulations! You have completed the first room. You have freed yourself from the past and created a functional space that should feel relaxing and peaceful.
